The
Government Champhai College, Champhai, Mizoram was established originally
as a private college in 1971 by the philanthropists of Champhai town
and neighboring villages with the objective of providing collegiate
education to the students of this remote hilly tribal town near the
international border of India with Myanmar. It was initially affiliated
to Guwahati University, then to NEHU from 1973 till 2nd July 2001. Currently,
it is affiliated to the new Mizoram University that came up in Aizawl,
Mizoram from July 2001. In 1978 the college attained the status of deficit
grants-in-aid College under Mizoram Government. The college has started
degree courses in Science in 1997. The Pre-University course that was
introduced in 1995 has now been delinked and the institute has only
under-graduate programmes. The college received UGC recognition under
2f and 12B in 1987.
The college has a sprawling campus of 11.66 acres (34.94 bighas) of
land, located at an elevation of about 4500 ft above mean sea level.
The college with its congenial strategic location has scope for expansion
and development.
The college offers degree courses in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics,
Botany and Zoology in Science; and English, Mizo, History, Political
Science, Economics, Geography and Education in Arts.
